What is LTL Shipping?

Less than truckload (LTL) shipping involves multiple shippers sharing space on the same truck, making it a cost-efficient option for companies with smaller freight shipments, typically less than 15,000 pounds. The process works on a "hub and spoke" model, where shipments are picked up by carriers and taken to local hubs or terminals for sorting and consolidation with other freight before continuing to their final destination. This model can result in longer transit times, similar to air travel with layovers, where a shipment may pass through several terminals before reaching its end point.

When To Consider Shipping LTL

Smaller shipments (150-15,000 lbs / 12 or less pallets)

Shipping large, bulky items or palletized/crated goods

Flexible delivery times

Local or regional shipments

Residential pickup or delivery

Pickup or delivery location needs a liftgate

Hear From Our Valued Partners

"I have worked with Amware for about 5 years now, and not one load has missed its pickup time. The communication chain and ability to get a real time answer is refreshing in a moment of concern. The teams, both front end and drivers, are respectful and have pride in their commitment to provide top shelf customer care and service. When rates were affected by COVID industry wide, Amware was transparent and upfront on the future of the transportation business, which allowed us to plan accordingly from an operation standpoint. I have never felt Amware couldn't get the job done. From furniture transportation to waste removal to fulfilling recycling needs; on flatbeds, straight truck or enclosed trailers, all were on time and clean with friendly faces to match."

"We have been using Amware to assist in scheduling both LTL and Truckload shipments for our products for more than ten years. With the variety of products that we supply, many of our shipments call for special handling to ensure they arrive at our customer in the same shape they left our facilities. Amware’s network of carriers address these requirements for us every time. We have challenged our account manager many times to arrange shipments, on short notice for prompt delivery, and he has continued to come through for us time after time. This allows us to fulfill our commitment to keep our customers rolling with storage and handling solutions that improve their material flow.
